Originally hailing from Mexico and Central America, tepache is a fermented pineapple drink rich in vitamins, antioxidants, prebiotics and probiotics. It is thought to have originated with either the Nahua people of central Mexico, or the Mayans. Over the hundreds of years since, specific ingredients have changed, and many variations of the classic tepache recipe exist today. The core ingredients typically consist of pineapple peels, raw sugar, and cinnamon.

Pineapple Road is tepache, Hawaiian style. We use local pineapples - their cores, peels and juice - as the base of our tepache brew. Together with our personal blend of local fresh fruit, herbs and spices, our classic tepache is a nod to the rich tradition of tepache from Mexico and Central America, infused with the unique produce and flavors of the Hawaiian Islands.

FAQ

  • Pineapple Road’s tepache is non-alcoholic. It makes for a great alternative to drinking booze. Though if you’re looking to add a little bite, it also makes for a mean mixer ;)

  • Tepache is made from fermenting pineapples, whereas kombucha is made from fermenting tea. Tepache naturally has lower levels of acetic acid than kombucha does, which translates to a milder, less “funky” flavor. But tepache is still a fermented probiotic beverage—so you get all the health benefits of fermentation, without the funk!

  • Yes! Our version is at least. We use small amounts of cane sugar in our fermentation process, but we flavor our tepache with natural fruit, herbs and spices to give it the signature just-sweet-enough taste.
